Called a Blogference, this is a three-day conference (April 13-15) you can join without leaving your desk or living room.

Get ready for some big learning as you hear from ministry practitioners interacting – through a series of hosted forums online. The organisers strongly welcome voices from all backgrounds and ministries, and some topics will be hosted by non-CCC ministers. So whatever your ministry background, do join the discussion. You just need an interest in doing campus/youth ministry, and if you’re not adverse to reading lots of ideas and thoughts online.

The topics to be discussed are:

Evangelism

Social Media in Ministry

Moms, Wives and Women in Ministry

Self-Directed Leadership Development

Getting Better through Collaboration

Do participate by voicing your comments on the host blogs. For more details join the Facebook group for the Blogference.

It’s a classic case of how we need not be unduly ‘afraid’ of technology as the church… but to carefully & prayerfully consider how these ‘new ways’ can help us better engage people for God’s glory. Read it and share your thoughts.

African Churches Use Mobile Phone to Ring Up Growth in Members

Here’s an excerpt:

“Mobile phone suspended on a belt round the waist, or from the neck, is a common sight among members of church congregations in Africa. Now, church leaders are heaping praise on mobile phones, sometimes called cell phones, because they say the instruments help congregations grow.

Mobile phone use increased rapidly in Africa about 10 years ago. At that time, however, some Christians on the continent criticised the phones for being “marks of materialism”. Now, that has changed.

“It is as if cell phones have come to revolutionise everything, even Christianity,” says Anglican Bishop Charles Gaita of Nyahururu in central Kenya. “They are making things happen quickly.”

Read the rest of this encouraging article

Just read this bit of news on Yahoo, titled “Pope to priests: Go forth and blog”

A presence on the Web, precisely because it brings us into contact with the followers of other religions, nonbelievers and people of every culture, requires sensitivity to those who do not believe, the disheartened and those who have a deep, unarticulated desire for enduring truth and the absolute. – Pope Benedict

Benedict’s words aim to encourage reflection in the church on the positive uses of new media. That doesn’t mean that (every priest) must open a blog or a Web site. It means that the church and the faithful must engage in this ministry in a digital world. At some point, a balance will be found. Young priests would have no trouble following the pope’s message, but (jokingly) those who have a certain age will struggle a bit more.
- Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli (68), Head of Vatican’s Social Communications Office

Tell us what you think… Post a comment.

1. “How To Improve Your Blog Post” (by Ed Cyzewski)
“Bloggers are always told that the most important step in drawing readers is writing great content. ‘Content is king,’ as they say. Even if you have a great idea and some excellent writing skills, here are a few ways to improve your blog post:”

2. “How and Why I’m Tweeting” (by John Piper)
“I see two kinds of response to social Internet media like blogging, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and others. One says: These media tend to shorten attention spans…”

3. “Is Online Community Real?” asks Justin Wise
“It’s not that the question is wrong, per se, it’s that the question is irrelevant. It’s a question that’s already been answered,” says Justin Wise.

How to make better use of Everystudent.com

EveryStudent.com is an evangelistic website started by Campus Crusade for Christ and there are local versions in several countries, including Singapore. Everystudent.com contains many articles in relation to many questions pre-believers ask. (Go peek at the site map and you’ll get an idea.) It has been widely publicised among students as a place to point seekers to. Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve been doing. We have failed to engage our friends in a conversation by hiding behind the invisible wall of Everystudent.com.

Let’s be more proactive. Everystudent.com is a resource to help you engage your friends, not as a shield to deflect all their questions to.

Here’s a suggestion on how you can use Everystudent.com better:

Listen to your friend’s questions.

If you don’t have a ready answer, tell him you will go look it up and let him know.

Go to the site and read through the relevant articles and digest them.
If you have any queries or doubt, discuss it first with a trusted, mature Christian.

Meet up or call your friend to discuss his questions again, this time with the answers you already have from the articles.

Dont’s:

Do NOT unload everything you have read on your friend. (No different from just giving them the website.) Choose what is relevant for him to hear. Be a good listener.

Do NOT be defensive. You’re not there to fight or win an argument. You are to have a spiritual conversation.

Now, go out and enjoy your conversations with your friends!

“The soul never thinks without a picture” – Aristotle

With the growth of high-speed broadband connections, video is becoming an integral part of the web experience. As connection speeds increase, it is even practical to watch satisfying streamed TV or full-length videos online. Special events can be ‘web-cast’ – i.e. streamed live on the Web.

Broadcasting itself is becoming more weblike: it’s increasingly interactive and feedback-based, and most radio or TV stations integrate the two mediums with a website. And ‘podcasting’ has become the Internet’s version of ‘listen when you want it’ broadcasting: audio (and increasingly video) content, just when the user wants it, using their computer or mobile device, rather than set time ‘appointment’ programs.
A simple help for you to start including God and the gospel in your blog.
How to start a blog, and how to write it so that it's more effectively bridging to those you want to reach.

Since you’re reading this, I assume that you either have a blog or are interested in starting a blog.

What is a blog?

A blog is simply a diary that is open for the world to read. (Well, more or less unless you lock it.)

Why is a blog so attractive?

In some ways all of us are busybodies. (Oh come on, don’t kid yourself.) We like to read juicy news of celebrities’ lives, hear gossips on who’s dating who, the latest happenings in our primary school friend’s life, etc.

Just as you like to read about other people’s lives, your friends (and sometimes strangers) like to read about your life too.

So, instead of just blogging about what you fed your cat, where you went shopping and stuff like that, why not include Christ in your blog?

Use Current Affairs

We live in a world that is growing smaller each day, thanks (or maybe no thanks) to globalization. Whatever happens on the other side of the globe has an impact on our lives. For example, September 11th attack changed security levels at airports and the way we look at others. Even though it happened in America, some of the members of the perpetrators traced their roots to Singapore. The tainted milk in China also has effects on us because we import many products from China. Right now, the current economic crisis that is happening in America also has a great impact on our jobs and cost of living.

All these current affairs underline the uncertainty we live in. You can share about the certainty that you have – salvation through our never-changing God. You can share about the security that you have in Jesus.

Use Movies or TV shows

Some movies and TV shows are great material to link to Christianity or at least get people to start thinking about God. Obvious ones are those that are overtly Christian, like “Lord of the Rings”, “Chronicles of Narnia”. Less obvious ones could be “Dark Knight”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

What do I mean?
In “Dark Knight”, Gotham city is portrayed as a city full of decadence and hence fear. A scene towards the end of the movie has Batman saying that what Gotham city needs is not a hero but a saviour who would be misunderstood. But this saviour will protect the people as a dark knight. (not word-for-word. it’s been a while since I watched the movie.) Think about it. Didn’t what Batman said sound like what Jesus did for the world?

“Pirates of the Caribbean” could bring out another idea of treasures. Everyone has something that he treasures and seeks after. You can then describe what you treasure and seek after – God and His kingdom.
